The Lauter Tun Beer and Music July 8th

Quick Overview:

*We have a week full of great events (which I'll briefly mention at this time). Monday we are working with Quality Brands Distributing and doing the Siebel Institute Sensory Analysis kit which provides off flavors for you to sample to help you determine flaws in your homebrew, professional brew, or other commercial beers. This is, however, completely full, but we will do it again in the future. Tuesday we have the Lucky Bucket Beer and Cheese Pairing (and I'm very excited about it). Call or email ASAP if you want a seat! And after the pairing we have a terrific touring band performing called "Theory of Flight" and they sound fantastic. Click on the band name to check out a video of them on youtube! Wednesday we have our 20s/Preprohibition party featuring music by the legendary Joe Genovesi. Thursday the Acoustic Gangster/Brian Alexander will be performing a variety of great cover tunes. Friday features Mark Irvin and Friends, and lastly Saturday Ron E Beck (Tower of Power Drummer) and guests will be playing some great jazz, funk, blues and more! Busy week, but should be fun for all.

*I have been slowly but surely adding posts to my blog and The LT's Blog. If you like to read about beer, bar reviews, beer gossip, cocktails, etc., feel free to view Journey to Beervana (www.beervanaomaha.blogspot.com). I started a Lauter Tun blog which basically just outlines upcoming LT events and music. For a quick look at upcoming shindigs you can check out www.thelautertunomaha.blogspot.com.

Delicious Beer:

Nebraska Brewing Company's Brunette Nut Brown Ale is back on tap after a brief hiatus. This is a wonderful, slightly malty sweet brown ale with hints of toffee, nuts, coffee and cocoa. In conjunction with the Beer and Cheese pairing we have Lucky Bucket Peach Wheat and an Aged Barleywine on draft that are both fantastic. The Peach wheat is a very mild, lightly fruity, crisp wheat beer perfect for summer. The barleywine ale, having been aged for a while, has mellowed out nicely creating a very drinkable beer...which is dangerous for a beer with such a high alcohol percentage. Ska ESB is a delicious English-Style Bitter. No, not 'bitter beer face' sort of bitter, it's basically and English Pale Ale with a nice malt backbone and a mild hop bitterness. Lastly we have NBC's Summertime Rye which is, as the brewer described it to me, sort of an "extra pale ale." It is fairly light in color with a very pleasant citrusy hop aroma and very crisp mild hop bitterness. We have in waiting a nice Lips of Faith series beer from New Belgium called Lost Abbey Brett Beer. It is a collaboration between NB and Lost Abbey. It is a 'wild ale' meaning it is fermented with various wild yeasts including brettanomyces which can give a unique tartness and start to sour the beer (on purpose). Very unique and very rare, give this beer a shot next time you come in, you may be surprised how darn drinkable it is!

Music:

Theory of FlightTuesday 07/10, 8:30ish - ?
This band is pretty impressive. They are on their way to record their EP in Illinois, and graciously offered last second to play after the beer and cheese pairing! Come down and support this great young talent.

Joe Genovesi
Wednesday 07/11, 8:30 pm - 11:30 pm
To complete the "Pre-prohibition" evening, legendary saxophonist and clarinetist Joe Genovesi will grace our stage for an absolutely unforgettable evening. You absolutely MUST NOT miss this rare performance and retro party!

Acoustic Gangster (feat. Brian Alexander)
Thursday 07/12, 8:30 pm - 11:30 pm
"The Acoustic Gangster" is a nickname of the singer/songwriter Brian Alexander. It reflects his seamless approach towards audiences (swag), his relentless work ethic (hustle), and his troubled past (street cred). At the age of 3 he wrote his first full length symphony. It wasn't very good.

Mark Irvin & Friends
Friday 07/13, 8:30 pm - 11:30 pm
An incredible singer/songwriter, Mark is joined by other local greats to give you a night of hits from yesterday and today. And for you original buffs, you'l definitely be treated to Mark's catchy originals!

Ron E. Beck (former 'Tower of Power' drummer)
Saturday 07/14, 8:30 pm - 11:30 pm
From 1975 through 1978, Ron E. Beck toured and recorded with the highly acclaimed group Tower of Power. He has also performed and recorded with Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., Bobby Womack, John Lee Hooker, Bell & James, Robbie Nevil, Sylvester and 2 Tons of Fun, Bill Withers, Clifford Coulter, Lydia Pense, Sista Monica, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Fred Wesley, Chester Thompson, and Merl Saunders to name a few. Ron E. Beck was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. At age eighteen, after reaching the top of the Omaha music scene Beck decided to go west along with his twin brother Donnie. The brothers followed their mentors Buddie Miles, Herbie Rich, and Stemsie Hunter to the West Coast, all of whom had just joined Michael Bloomfield's Electric Flag. Since the 70’s Beck has been an established and welcomed contributor to the Northern California music scene. Ron E. will be joined by Mitch Towne on organ, Andrew Bailie on guitar, Craig Balderston on bass with Brad Cordle a guest vocalist at the show as well

Homebrew Showdown
August 5th
The Lauter Tun is hosting a homebrew competition on August 5th. The goal, hopefully, being that the winner will be able to brew his or her beer at the Tallgrass Brewery in Kansas and then we will put that beer on tap at our bar! Details will come but there are afew guidelines. Being that it may be brewed on Tallgrass Brewery's equipment, we have to limit a few styles. Almost any styles of beer except no wood aged, no intensely spiced beers (namely peppers), and likely no sour (unless Tallgrass has a wild yeast strain available). I and the other judges will judge each individual beer like a sort of mini-best-in-show. I will have category forms to fill out posted online or on facebook and on my blogs. We will need two (2) bombers or three (3) 12oz bottles. Limit two entries per person. We will judge by style but also more important than just the style is the flavor and creativity. Feel free to contact one of the homebrew clubs or myself for more details.

Fundraiser
August 9th 7:00pm-Though details are being finalized, The Lauter Tun will be hosting a fundraiser to help build wells in Africa. There will be a cover charge, all of which will go toward the charity and we will increase certain drink prices slightly, the increase will of course also go toward the cause. There will be live music and probably some catered food. A great cause and some great entertainment. Be sure to check this out!

Thank you all so much for your support. We hope to see you all very soon!
